Katherine Country Club

History

The Katherine Country Club started out as the Katherine Golf Club and then became the Katherine Golf & Lawn Bowls Club and was finally renamed the Katherine Country Club in June 1988.

Having survived with some damage by the January 1998 flood, the Katherine Country Club is continuing to update the facilities for all Members, Guests and Bonafide Travellers.

Interesting facts

In May 1962 local golf enthusiasts hacked out 5 holes course with sand greens around the racecourse
In May 1965 member of the RAAF No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron developed a very rought 5 hole layout out at Tindal
In March 1969 a committee was formed to develop a 9 hole golf course on the current site in Katherine because the RAAF were moving out and the course would be closed
In April 1970 15-20 players commenced using the newly developed course on a regular basis
In February 1971 the Katherine Golf Club became affiliated with the SA Association and commenced playing weekly competitions
In June 1974 golf club members won the tender to remove a "Sydney Williams Hut" from the old airport. The shell of the building became the frame for the new clubhouse
In March 1975 female golfers commenced playing competitive golf in Katherine
In April 1976 moved into a purpose built clubhouse on the current site was open
In June 1982 local bowlers commenced playing on a new green
In August 1983 a 8 Rink Bowling Green was officially opened
In June 1988 Katherine Golf & Bowls Club was renamed to the Katherine Country Club
In June 1990 the 9 hole grass green golf course was officially opened and the 18 hole sand course was closed
In 1994 the Clubhouse had airconditioning installed throughout
In 1996 Pokie Machines were introduced to the Club
In 1997 EFTPOS facilities were introduced to the Club
In January 1998 the Clubhouse was damaged by flood
In 1998 KENO was introduced to the Club
In November 1998 the new Clubhouse was opened
In 1999 TAB & SKY Channel were introduced to the Club
In 2000 the ATM was introduced to the Club
In 2003 the Childrens playground was erected
In March 2004 the Beer Garden Bar was officially opened
In September 2008 a new 8 Rink Synethnic Bowling Green was opened
In October 2009 new car-parking area's and relandscaping of the entrance was completed
A new machinery shed and 15 individual buggy sheds were built in 2011
A dedicated Pro Shop opened in May 2011 for service to the golf course
